Linebacker Launch: Spartans Lock Down Philly’s Zykee Scott
Three-star linebacker Zykee Scott from La Salle College High School in Philadelphia has scheduled an official visit to Michigan State from May 29–31. Ranked No. 420 nationally by Rivals, No. 31 among linebackers, and No. 14 in Pennsylvania, Scott recorded 58 tackles and nine TFLs last season. MSU is the only school with an official visit locked in, though UNC, Pitt, Tennessee, and Wake Forest remain contenders.
The Spartans must be thrilled to have a guy whose highlight reel looks like he’s chasing stray cats in a backyard tackle drill. Expect Fitzgerald and staff to roll out the green carpet—complete with a Spartan-shaped welcome mat and maybe a slow‐tackle demonstration by Coach himself. If recruiting were a reality show, MSU’s bid for Scott would be the episode with dramatic music, tearful parents, and a cameo from a mascot doing push-ups.
College Cold Cuts: Porter Martone’s Frozen Ascent
Freshman Porter Martone has burst onto the college hockey scene, leading No. 1 Michigan State with 20 goals and 41 points. Thanks to a rule allowing CHL/OHL players in NCAA, Martone chose MSU over a traditional OHL-to-NHL path. Coached by Adam Nightingale, he’s relishing the Big Ten’s faster competition as a stepping stone to pro hockey. The Spartans currently chase a third straight Big Ten title with four games left, trailing Michigan by a single point.
Nothing says “cutthroat college experience” like practicing on ice at dawn and being told you’ll earn every inch of that frozen turf. Martone’s decision to swap junior leagues for lectures on passing furthest from the puck must frustrate nostalgic scouts longing for old-school clutches and gratuitous glitter on skates. He’s playing like the Spartans’ secret weapon—and if the locker room starts feeling too warm, he can always cool off in the Zamboni’s ride‐along seat.
Spring Spotlight: Blue-Chip DL Reinaldo Perez Checks the Turf
Four-star Columbus Academy defensive lineman Reinaldo Perez, ranked No. 288 overall and No. 34 among DLs in the 2027 class, will attend Michigan State’s spring practice on April 4. Perez, who also holds offers from Ohio State, Florida, USC, and Indiana, visits East Lansing to get a taste of MSU’s culture under defensive line coach Winston DeLattiboudere III, who has already hosted several high-profile recruits this cycle.
Who knew that planting cleats on spring grass could feel so momentous? Perez’s visit is akin to a dinner date: you show up, check out the salad bar, meet the coach’s mom, then decide if you want to make it official. Meanwhile, OSU sits half an hour away, probably brewing a giant jug of “we’ve-always-done-it-this-way” punch. Good luck to Perez navigating all the free T-shirts, Spartan chants, and hypothetical playoff promises—once you’ve had a taste, will you press “commit” or swipe left?
