Gators Reload: Top Recruits, Kentucky Rivals & QB Battles

Five-Star Linebacker Snubs Gators—Now What?

Tampa Jesuit’s five-star linebacker Kaden Henderson, long considered Florida’s dream recruit and the nation’s No. 1 at his position for the 2027 class, unveiled a top-five list Friday—and Florida wasn’t on it. Despite close ties to true freshman QB Will Griffin and visits to Gainesville both past and upcoming, the Gators find themselves trailing Texas A&M, Miami, Ohio State, Alabama, and Notre Dame. New coach Jon Sumrall insists Florida’s in-state advantage and SEC pedigree should seal the deal, but Henderson’s omission underscores recruiting uncertainty even after multiple staff changes.

Local hotshot Henderson spurns the Gators like a telemarketer’s pitch—despite the Gators claiming “it starts here at home.” Perhaps he’s just biding time for the perfect Snapchat filter or reminding us that no matter how many barbeque tailgates you throw, sometimes recruits prefer the out-of-state buffet. Joakim Gouda’s charm offensive might fill the gap, but recruiting is a lot like high school prom: you can plan the perfect playlist, but if someone else brings better punch, you’re left dancing alone.

Gators Hunt Kentucky Hoodoo at Rupp Arena

Florida’s No. 5 basketball team heads to Rupp Arena aiming for a sweep of Kentucky for the first time since the 2017-18 season. Back then, the Gators squeaked out a 66-64 road win thanks to balanced scoring and stifling defense that held Kentucky to 40 percent shooting. In the rematch, Florida rolled 80-67 behind Jalen Hudson’s 22 points. Now, riding a 10-game win streak that includes a Feb. 14 victory over the Wildcats, coach Todd Golden’s squad has a chance to exorcise decades of road woes in Lexington despite the Wildcats’ 6-2 home record.

Nothing says “we’re serious” like swaggering into Rupp Arena with a ten-game win streak—and a prayer that history’s bad voodoo doesn’t haunt you. Golden insists it’s “just another tough place to play,” which is coach-speak for “bring plenty of Band-Aids.” Meanwhile, Florida’s last road road trip to Lexington still feels like a frat house hazing, but hey, if ya can’t scare the Wildcats out of their plush seats, you might at least scare your own fans into wearing black.

Florida’s QB Showdown Springs to Life

Under new coach Jon Sumrall and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, Florida’s spring practices have centered on an open quarterback competition between Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo and returning backup Tramell Jones Jr. Neither has established a clear edge, and Sumrall refuses to rush a decision. Criteria are straightforward—leadership, ball protection, explosive plays, and command at the line. Early reports praise both Philo’s system familiarity and Jones’s interpersonal leadership, leaving the starter spot wide open well into preseason.

Welcome to Gainesville’s version of The Bachelor: two QBs, one coveted hula-hoop replica of a playbook, and a coach who’s waving roses with zero timeline. Philo brings experience and résumé bullet points, while Jones has the hometown heart and locker-room groupies. Meanwhile, receivers are busy cooing about chemistry like they’re on a romantic reality show. In the end, only turnovers and mouths hitting fumbles will reveal who gets the final rose—or, you know, the starting job.
