Gridiron Teasers: Spring Prac Shakes Up FSU Football

Florida State concluded its first week of spring practices with padded pads and plenty of intrigue. The quarterback battle between Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels and redshirt freshman Kevin Sperry is already tilting toward veteran Daniels, but with just one media-open session, the ultimate starter remains suspenseful. On defense, the departure of 315-pound DT Darrell Jackson Jr. to the NFL leaves a size void that returning Desir brothers and a handful of transfers must fill. Offensively, with Gus Malzahn retired, Mike Norvell tapped Tim Harris Jr. to call plays; Harris’s UCF pedigree promises familiar rushing sheet music, plus a few fresh formations. Twelve practices remain for position scraps and identity forging ahead of 2026.

Welcome to FSU’s very own spring soap opera, where the quarterback carousel turns faster than a Ferris wheel at the county fair—only with more shoulder pads and fewer cotton candy stains. Daniels vs. Sperry is the kind of primetime duel that could sell out Doak S. Campbell Stadium if we’re lucky. On the defensive front, the team lost Big Jackson Jr. to the NFL, and now they’re cobbling together human Lego blocks of various weights to rebuild. Offense is in the hands of Harris, the guy who already made defenses tremble at UCF; hopefully, he throws in a few surprise plays—like actually completing a Hail Mary in practice without hitting the cameraman. Stick around, because if this spring is any indication, FSU football might just choreograph its own highlight reel—or at least supply enough bloopers for social media gold.

Noles’ Bracket Protest: Loucks Fires Pre-Tourney Shots

Florida State men’s basketball narrowly missed the NCAA Tournament after finishing 18-15, stumbling early but surging late with 10 wins in 13 games. A thrilling ACC tourney clash with Duke ended with a near-miss, and FSU declined an NIT bid. Head coach Luke Loucks took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate the selected teams and boldly predicted that FSU “will be invited to the party soon enough” and claims they’d beat many of the current tournament squads. The Seminoles will need roster turnover—six seniors depart—and look to high-impact transfers and improved shooting to secure consistent Big Dance appearances. Incoming freshman Marcis Ponder adds size, but another veteran presence and ball-handling guard are also priorities.

Luke Loucks just RSVP’d FSU to the NCAA Tournament before the actual invitation arrived—classic move. It’s like showing up at a party you weren’t invited to yet, grabbing the dip, and declaring you’re the host. The late-season spark under Loucks had fans dreaming Sweet Sixteens, but once again, the Noles got ghosted by the bracket committee. Now they’re in full “mission rebuild” mode, shipping out seniors and hunting ready-made transfers like college basketball version of Pokémon. And yes, Marcis Ponder’s length will help on the boards, provided he figures out which end of the court he’s on. Here’s hoping FSU’s next tweet is a celebratory dance video in March rather than a resignation speech in May.
