Badgers’ Recruiting Rollercoaster

Badgers’ Recruiting Rollercoaster - painting of Wisconsin Badgers football venue

Badgers Whiff on Blue-Chip OT Despite Big Hype

Wisconsin’s 2027 recruiting class hit a snag when 4-star offensive tackle Cameron Wagner chose Oregon over the Badgers, Notre Dame, and Illinois. Despite a blazing start—locking in Cole Reiter, Ethan McIntosh, and the Mallinger twins—the Badgers couldn’t close the deal with the St. Joseph, IL, star. New OL coach Eric Mateos kept Wisconsin in Wagner’s final four, but the DTAC (Down To A Commit) moment unfolded on the Pat McAfee Show, where Wagner pledged to Dan Lanning’s Ducks. With Wagner off the board, Wisconsin shifts focus to prospects like Reed Gerkin, while clinging to a top-20 ranking in the 2027 class and hoping spring practice vibes can spark fresh momentum.

The Badgers’ recruiting juggernaut turned into a carnival ride when the prize bull of the Midwest casually winked and walked away. Enter Wagner, stage left, flashing us his RSVP to Oregon like he was leaving a party nobody really wanted him at—despite our best bribes of freshman year sub sandwiches and a guaranteed front-row seat to fall mud bowl. Fear not, Wisconsin faithful: we’ll pivot to Plan B’s Plan C and even Plan D (hi, Reed Gerkin!), because nothing says “we got this” like publicly hunting down the next shiny lineman after losing your top guy on national TV. Trust in the process, or at least in our snacks at spring practice.

Mateos’ Magic: Badgers In Final Four for OL Crown

Eric Mateos has Wisconsin primed as a Final Four destination for elite offensive line talent. Although he recently lost 4-star Cameron Wagner to Oregon, Mateos has Wisconsin in the top four for Ohio star Reed Gerkin, among finalists Virginia Tech, Illinois, and Kentucky. Gerkin, a 6’5″, 290-pound tackle with power and pancake-block flair, boasts 30-plus offers from Power Four programs. Already responsible for commitments from Cole Reiter and the Mallinger twins, Mateos has rapidly rebuilt Wisconsin’s in-state dominance and national perception on the recruiting trail. A Gerkin pledge on June 22 would cap a stellar start to his Madison tenure.

Move over, Gandalf—there’s a new wizard in town, and his name is Eric Mateos. Forget spells and potions: this guy conjures offensive linemen out of thin air. Sure, the first Big Fish slipped away, but Mateos simply adjusted his hat, summoned Reed Gerkin, and reminded everyone that Wisconsin’s all-you-can-pancake buffet is open for business. He’s the Indiana Jones of blocking bolts, trekking into the wilds of Ohio high schools to wrestle prospects into submission. By June 22, he might just unveil his crowning jewel, while rivals stand in awe, clutching their dusty playbooks and wondering where they went wrong. Recruiting sorcery, meet Bedlam at Camp Randall.
