Sean May Revamps UNC’s Big Men Legacy

Sean May Revamps UNC’s Big Men Legacy - painting of North Carolina Tar Heels basketball venue

Tar Heel Legend Sean May Molds Rebounding Giants

Two decades after starring on UNC’s 2005 championship team, former big man Sean May is back on campus as an assistant coach charged with restoring Carolina’s rebounding prowess. Last season, the Tar Heels tumbled to 105th in rebounds per game and 240th in offensive boards, thanks in part to a lack of size—averaging just 77.2 inches in 2024. May is now tutoring freshman Caleb Wilson on efficient post moves and jump hooks, while guiding 7-foot Estonian center Henri Veesaar in face-up skills and spacing to overcome stronger defenders. Head coach Hubert Davis insists that rebounding “determines the outcome at both ends,” and May’s mentorship is central to UNC’s bid to reclaim frontcourt dominance.

UNC fans rejoiced when they heard “big man coach” instead of “karaoke host,” but the truth is Sean May’s new job title might as well read “Rebound Pope.” Apparently, Carolina discovered the radical idea of adding height—just like your high school basketball coach taught you in 1998. Wilson’s biggest takeaway: don’t try to bulldoze someone into the paint; instead, a gentle jump hook will do wonders for your knees. Meanwhile, Veesaar has reportedly learned that facing up can sometimes beat trying to arm-wrestle a 7-footer. Next up: the team will tackle spacing and maybe the arcane art of the inbounds play, while May contemplates whether film sessions count as cardio. God bless rebounding.
