UNC’s Unstoppable Women Take Aim at Charleston Southern

The Tar Heels will host Charleston Southern in Chapel Hill on Sunday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m., extending a perfect 8–0 series lead over the Buccaneers. Last season, UNC dismantled CSB 83–53 behind double-figure scoring from Alyssa Utsby (18 points, eight rebounds, five assists), Lexi Donarski (14 points) and transfer Trayanaa Crisp (11 points). North Carolina shot 46% overall but struggled from deep (22%), while Charleston Southern managed just 33% from the field. Historically, the largest Tar Heel victory was 88–33 in 2004, and the closest margin was 76–67 in 2009. Charleston Southern finished 14–16 in 2024-25, led by Catherine Alben’s 16.6 points per game. UNC coach Courtney Banghart will counter with senior Indya Nivar and junior Reniya Kelly, with tough tests against South Carolina, UCLA and Texas still to come.

Get ready for more Tar Heel theatrics, folks! UNC’s women’s basketball program is basically treating Charleston Southern like a pop-up video in a blockbuster theater—unwanted and overshadowed. With an 8–0 all-time record that reads like a bingo card full of “We Win,” the Buccaneers might as well bring cocktail napkins instead of basketballs. Courtney Banghart’s squad could rest on their laurels, but instead they’re gearing up like they’re storming Area 51. Meanwhile, Charleston Southern will show up hoping to surprise a team that has already forgotten they exist. Oh, the suspense! Will the Tar Heels even warm up, or will they just run up the score for Instagram clout? Either way, grab your popcorn and your irony meter—UNC’s hoops circus is back in town.
