Byron Baldwin’s Camp Stardom Cut Short by Injury

Indiana true freshman Byron Baldwin entered fall camp as a revelation, earning repetitions with the first-string defense and praise from veteran teammates and coaches. A late-camp injury, however, wiped out his chance to start the season. Despite being listed as available in Week 1, Baldwin sat out six games, returned to the travel squad by Week 7 without seeing action, and finally debuted in a blowout win over UCLA on Oct. 25. In limited snaps at slot corner and on kickoff coverage, he logged three tackles. A consensus four-star recruit, Baldwin impressed with his blend of physical tools and rapid mental processing, but now finds himself in a reserve role as Indiana chases an undefeated Big Ten run.

Baldwin’s meteoric rise from January enrollee to defensive prospect might read like a feel-good underdog story—if it weren’t for that pesky thing called “bone and tendon.” Our beloved freshman wunderkind, lauded for “picking up the defense faster than marshmallows absorb hot cocoa,” now spends his Saturdays cheering on the starters from the sideline. Coaches, normally starved of good news, can at least relish the thrilling plot twist of having one fewer rookie to manage. The fans get suspense: Will he suit up? Will he play? Will he finally break free from the medical tent? Tune in next week for another heart-pounding episode of “Injury Report: College Edition.”
