Jimbo Fisher’s SEC Homecoming Rumor Mill Heats Up
Former Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher is once again at the center of SEC coaching chatter, this time as a top candidate for the Auburn Tigers’ vacancy. Auburn dismissed Hugh Freeze after a disappointing 4-5 run and 1-5 SEC record, with the final straw being a 10-3 loss to the winless Kentucky Wildcats. Fisher’s résumé includes a national title at Florida State, a 45-25 record at Texas A&M, and a stint as Auburn’s quarterbacks coach from 1993–1998. Known for elite recruiting—he assembled one of the all-time great classes in 2022—Fisher now lends his insights to the ACC Network. Other names mentioned for Auburn include Tulane’s Jon Sumrall, former Penn State boss James Franklin, and Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham.
In a twist that even soap operas would envy, Jimbo Fisher is flirting with an SEC comeback like a high school prom king scouting last year’s sweetheart. Auburn fans, having just tossed Hugh Freeze into the coaching scrap heap, are eyeing Fisher’s glittering past as if it were the newest must-have gadget. Never mind that Fisher fled College Station amid fan unrest; apparently “sunny Auburn afternoons” and the promise of more stable restrooms have rekindled his recruiting mojo. Expect the usual parade of hot takes, tweetstorms, and conspiracy theories about secret playbooks hidden in peppered water bottles. If hired, Fisher will no doubt charm recruits with his championship bling—and maybe fill Auburn’s locker rooms with enough drama to rival a reality TV reunion special.
