Sooner Sports Spotlight: Hoops, Softball & Leadership - painting of Oklahoma Sooners basketball, softball venue

Sooners Embark on Daring Spokane Adventure vs. Bulldogs

Oklahoma cruised past Saint Francis 102–66 in its opener and now heads to Spokane Arena to face No. 21 Gonzaga. The Bulldogs, fresh off a 98–43 win over Texas Southern, boast WCC champions status and return top scorer Graham Ike, who averaged 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds last season. Fifth-year guard Tyon Grant-Foster chipped in 15 in their opener. Meanwhile, OU sees new faces—Nijel Pack, Xzayvier Brown, Derrion Reid and Tae Davis—blended with rising talents like redshirt freshman Kuol Atak, who poured in 18 points in the opener. Saturday’s 9:30 p.m. CT tip on ESPN2 marks the first true test for Porter Moser’s revamped squad.

Gonzaga’s “really good team” billing sounds suspiciously like teacher praise for the kid who memorized the textbook, while Oklahoma’s transfer brigade looks like the Avengers thrown together on short notice. Expect cinematic hero arcs from Atak and co., complete with slow-mo layups and dramatic timeouts. Stay tuned for the inevitable plot twist: Moser insisting that everyone just “focus on the process” while the bench Googles “what is process?”

Sooner Slugger Ella Parker Crushes Fall Scrimmages

After battling a nagging lower-body injury through last season’s SEC run, senior slugger Ella Parker reports she “feels good” and is back at full throttle. Parker boosted her batting average from .415 to .423 in 2025 while setting career highs with 15 homers, a .789 slugging percentage and 36 walks, plus 10 stolen bases. Under Patty Gasso’s careful eye, she’s also been tried in the outfield to hone her throws and running, making her a versatile option beyond designated player duties. Parker credits JT Gasso’s “wizardry” in the cages as she gears up for another big campaign.

It turns out “rest” is just code for “don’t show up limping on TV,” according to Coach Gasso’s patented half-mile check-in strategy. Meanwhile, Parker’s newfound outfield gig has teammates scrambling to explain what an overhand throw is. Watch as she executes a game-saving catch, then petition to start rotating pitchers by midseason—because who doesn’t want their slugger moonlighting on the mound?

Sophomore Spark Plug Forsythe Ignites Sooners’ Backcourt

Porter Moser, once a staunch anti-portal coach, has flipped his playbook for 2025–26, adding veterans Nijel Pack, Xzayvier Brown and Tae Davis to the mix. Yet his prized developmental success story remains sophomore guard Dayton Forsythe, who earned top-12 freshman minutes by showing up ready. Last year he averaged 4.3 points on 45 percent shooting, including 45 percent from deep, in just over 12 minutes per game. Forsythe vows to expand his role this season—being more vocal, leading by example and grinding through SEC battles.

Porter Moser’s transformation from retention guru to portal peddler reads like a mid-season reboot. But credit must be given: Forsythe’s mantra of “just make your coach say I have to play him” is exactly the kind of corporate-speak that wins locker-room buy-in. Expect him to walk into the gym every morning, flex his stats, and whisper, “I’m bringing value,” because nothing says leadership like 4.3 points per outing.
