NCAA Slaps Spartans with Hefty Penalty

Michigan State’s football program agreed to a negotiated resolution with the NCAA after recruiting violations under former coach Mel Tucker. The deal includes three years of probation, a $30,000 fine plus 1.5% of the annual football budget, and the vacating of 14 wins from the 2022–24 seasons due to ineligible players. Several staff members received show-cause orders, and even new coach Jonathan Smith lost five wins from his first year despite no personal wrongdoing. MSU hopes to move past the penalties and refocus on the present and future of Spartan football.

In a move that proves “you can’t buy loyalty, but you can buy a very expensive punch card for impermissible recruiting inducements,” the NCAA has turned Spartan Stadium into the world’s fanciest museum of vacated victories. Fans can now tour the empty trophy cases, marvel at three years of probation paperwork, and witness coach Smith valiantly try to recruit through interpretive dance. At least Mel Tucker’s empty wallet will have extra room once that 1.5% hits home.

Coach Rossi Ascends to Press Box, Spills Penn State Secrets

Michigan State defensive coordinator Joe Rossi discussed the pros and cons of coaching from the press box versus the sideline and offered insights into how to contain Penn State’s offensive threats. Despite a six-game losing streak and matching 3–6 overall records with Penn State, Rossi praised his players’ effort and breakdown details from past games. He shared highlights of his recent presser via video and transcript, emphasizing discipline, detailed preparation, and the team’s small victories as they head into their next matchup.

Nothing says “we’re this close to winning” like a coach relocating to the press box so he can finally see the forest for the trees—only to realize the trees keep running past him and back into the end zone. Rossi’s tips on avoiding penalties might work wonders, provided the Spartans can remember which colored jersey they’re supposed to tackle. Meanwhile, fans are just hoping his secret Penn State exposé doesn’t leak—last thing we need is another team reading our playbook in the bathroom stalls.
