Sooners’ Offense Woes vs. Playoff Poll Positions

Sooners' Offense Woes vs. Playoff Poll Positions - painting of Oklahoma Sooners football venue

Sooners’ Offense Takes a Nap While Defense Does the Heavy Lifting

Oklahoma eked out a 17-6 win over Missouri despite an anemic offensive performance. With running backs Xavier Robinson and Tory Blaylock hobbled, coordinator Ben Arbuckle dialed up deep shots that only clicked once—an 87-yard Isaiah Sategna catch-and-run. Quarterback John Mateer missed a few downfield chances, and the unit converted just 6-of-16 third downs. Luckily, the defense forced turnovers and special teams kept points on the board, including Tate Sandell’s 22nd straight field goal. With one more win, the Sooners will punch their ticket back to the College Football Playoff.

Fear not, college football fans! While OU’s offense snoozed like it was on a Thanksgiving turkey coma, the defense roamed the field like caffeinated hyenas. Coach Venables must have whispered to the D, “Steal the ball, score the points,” because they obliged faster than a student running late to finals. Meanwhile, Arbuckle’s playbook apparently moonlights as a bedtime story, lulling everyone to sleep until Sategna ripped off that electrifying 87-yard sprint. If the Sooners make the playoff, we’ll give credit to gravity—because everything else sure looked stuck in neutral.

Polls Can’t Get Enough of Sooners as Season Closes

Entering the final week of the regular season, Oklahoma held steady at No. 8 in both the AP Poll and Coaches Poll after beating Missouri 17-6. The Sooners boast five wins against ranked opponents—the only team to do so this year and their first time with five Top-25 victories since 2015. With a Senior Day matchup against LSU looming, a win would secure their spot in the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2019 and potentially earn them a home game in the new 12-team format.

Meanwhile, the pollsters over at AP and USA Today must be running a fan club for Larry the Sooners’ Mascot—because they’ve refused to budge from No. 8. After dominating Missouri, the voting bots stubbornly clicked “stay” as if they’re stuck in an elevator. If OU can handle LSU on Senior Day, they’ll waltz back into the CFP like a cow at a county fair, enjoying the home field advantage while the rest of the country scrambles for a selfie with the Sooners’ trophy case. Who knew polls could be so loyal?
