Tar Heels Overhaul: Transfers and Offense Reboot

Tar Heels Overhaul: Transfers and Offense Reboot - painting of North Carolina Tar Heels football venue

Running Back Bails on Chapel Hill

Davion Gause, a sophomore running back for the North Carolina Tar Heels, has officially entered the transfer portal after modest 2025 stats (258 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns) and a running-back-by-committee led by Demon June. Despite a slight uptick in receptions, Gause fell behind June’s team-leading 464 yards and looks elsewhere for opportunities. His departure leaves a thinner depth chart, with Benjamin Hall and freshman Crew Davis next in line, and could consolidate carries in Chapel Hill’s backfield.

It turns out even Bill Belichick can’t assemble a truly fearsome running back room without a teleportation device. Gause’s exit feels less like a transfer and more like a strategic retreat, leaving Chapel Hill scrambling to replace somebody who barely made the stat sheet. With June gorging on carries like he’s at an all-you-can-eat buffet, the rest of the backfield might as well collect participation trophies. In the end, the only thing more impressive than Gause’s transfer is how fast the Tar Heels turned a committee into a solitary show.

Tar Heels’ Passing Game Flops in Belichick Debut

The UNC Tar Heels finished 4-8 in 2025 under Bill Belichick, hampered by underwhelming quarterback play from Gio Lopez (1,747 yards, 10 TDs, 5 INTs) and inconsistent coaching. Lopez rarely topped 167 passing yards early in the season, leading UNC to seek a new signal-caller. Wide receiver Jordan Shipp managed 60 catches for 671 yards and 6 TDs despite poor passes, shining late with touchdowns in four of the last five games. North Carolina’s recruitment of Travis Burgess hints at a quarterback overhaul.

Who knew that importing NFL royalty would produce something nearer the local pee-wee league? Belichick’s Tar Heels rolled out an offense that looked like it got lost on the way to the playbook—Lopez completed passes only when he felt generous, and Shipp’s heroics came as a delightful surprise, like finding a pizza slice in a salad bar. Now UNC is chasing a four-star recruit as if he’s the magical antidote to five months of gridiron missteps. Stay tuned, because Belichick’s next brilliant move might be installing a new scoreboard to make the numbers look better.
