Arkansas Coaching Shakeup: Football Hire, Basketball Woes

Calipari’s Razorbacks: Slow Start, Furious Rally

Arkansas men’s basketball stumbled through a sloppy first half against Fresno State, missing shots and playing out of sync despite a 34–24 lead at intermission. Coach John Calipari’s squad woke up in the second half thanks to back-to-back threes from Karter Knox, sparking a 16–2 run. Darius Acuff Jr. then took over, pouring in 18 points and serving eight assists, stabilizing the offense and showing the growth Calipari demands. However, discipline remained a concern: Billy Richmond III’s powerful dunk was followed by a flagrant-2 ejection for an ill-timed elbow. Despite the 82–58 win, Calipari left with more notes than a conductor, determined to correct slow starts, emotional lapses, and an overreliance on star guards before the Razorbacks can fulfill their potential.

In a display of typical coaching theatrics, Calipari apparently spent halftime scribbling furiously on the back of his playbook—no doubt lamenting that his team thought “defense” was a new sneaker brand. The halftime pep talk must’ve involved interpretive dance, because suddenly Arkansas remembered how to dribble and shoot. Meanwhile, Richmond’s ejection proves that nothing says “team chemistry” like a midgame elbow—on your own player. Calipari’s next assignment: teach big men the difference between “aggressive defense” and “public nudity.” Until then, expect more halftime choreography and fewer flying fists.

Silverfield’s Special Teams Splash: Hogs Land Lunsford

New Arkansas football coach Ryan Silverfield tapped Auburn’s former special teams coordinator, Chad Lunsford, to shore up the Razorbacks’ maligned units. Under Lunsford, Auburn ranked in the top 30 in most kickoff metrics, tallied four returns of 30+ yards, and limited opponents to just one kick return over 20 yards. Auburn’s kickoff return average hit No. 3 nationally at 23 yards per return, highlighted by Rayshawn Pleasant’s SEC-leading 98-yard touchdown. Punter Hudson Kaak averaged 42 yards and placed 11 of 49 punts inside the 20. The field goal unit converted 20-of-25 attempts and was perfect on 35 extra points. Arkansas struggled with procedural penalties and explosive returns last year, so Silverfield also boosted his staff with veteran coordinators and analysts to build a more disciplined, dynamic squad.

Cue the rimshot: Silverfield’s staff shakeup is the coaching equivalent of rearranging the living room furniture—only this time with actual data instead of couch pillows. Chad Lunsford arrives to sprinkle special-teams fairy dust on a unit that once treated kickoff coverage like a casual Sunday stroll. Freshman kicker Scott Starzyk brings a cannon for a leg, while punter Devin Bale’s booming boots could probably clear a small lake. Silverfield’s dream team of assistants will have to herd these hogs off the field with fewer penalties than a toddler in a candy store. Grab your popcorn; this isn’t just a coaching hire, it’s a whole home improvement show.
