Auburn’s Transfer Turmoil Unravels Starters

Auburn’s Transfer Turmoil Unravels Starters - painting of Auburn Tigers football venue

Ashton Daniels Jumps Ship in Auburn Quarterback Shake-Up

Auburn’s senior quarterback Ashton Daniels confirmed he will enter the transfer portal, marking the second signal-caller to depart since the end of the 2025 season. Daniels, who transferred from Stanford last year, took over as starter midseason after Jackson Arnold was benched and showed promise in late games—most notably a 31-of-44, 353-yard, two-touchdown outing against Vanderbilt. Despite finishing strong and preserving his redshirt in the Mercer game, Daniels cited God’s plan for his move away from Auburn, where new head coach Alex Golesh is already eyeing high-profile portal QBs like USF’s Byrum Brown. With freshman Deuce Knight as the lone returning quarterback, the Tigers will dive headfirst into the January transfer window, chasing names including Sam Leavitt, D.J. Lagway, Rocco Becht and others.

Welcome to Auburn, where quarterback continuity goes to die. They say patience is a virtue, but apparently not on the Plains—especially if you’re a QB who dares to pass for more than 10 yards. Head coach Alex Golesh must be thrilled: he inherits a position group so vacant you could host a haunted house. As Daniels follows Arnold out the portal door, one almost expects an automatic revolving door to materialize in the locker room. Rumor has it the next turf to be cleared will be the cheerleading squad—just to keep the tradition of “everyone’s invited to leave” consistent. Keep your eyes peeled for that latest lineup announcement.

Secondary Mass Exodus Leaves Auburn Corners Bailing Out

Cornerback Kayin Lee announced his decision to enter the transfer portal, joining Jay Crawford, Raion Strader and A’Mon Lane-Ganus in leaving Auburn’s defense. Lee started for two seasons, notching 63 tackles and three interceptions, but now departs along with seven of Auburn’s defenders since Alex Golesh’s arrival. With just Rayshawn Pleasant remaining among 2025 regulars, Auburn’s secondary is effectively an empty shell. Defensive coordinator DJ Durkin’s hope for roster retention has cratered, as the Tigers face the prospect of rebuilding their cornerback room via the transfer portal ahead of its Jan. 2 opening.

Behold Auburn’s new recruiting strategy: if you can’t keep your own players, at least collect the most dramatic exit interviews. The Plains now resemble a “Buy One Get Four Free” clearance rack—corners practically leaping into the portal like it’s an Amazon checkout sale. Coach Durkin must be polishing his portal-shopping goggles, ready to swipe right on any CB who hasn’t been to Tuscaloosa yet. Forget “defensive cohesion,” Auburn’s motto is now “defensive decomposition”—every man for himself, starting with our roster. Incoming transfer targets, please bring tissues; we’re running low on tears of disbelief.
