From Top 25 to Unranked: Auburn’s Hoops Collapse

Auburn’s men’s basketball squad has tumbled out of the AP Top 25 after suffering its third lopsided defeat this season. Once ranked No. 21, the Tigers were crushed 88-60 by No. 6 Purdue, following earlier blowout losses to No. 1 Arizona (by 29) and No. 2 Michigan (by 30). Despite still ranking 37th in KenPom and receiving the third-most votes among unranked teams, Steven Pearl’s roster—anchored by just one returning scholarship player, Tahaad Pettiford—has struggled to build chemistry, relying heavily on transfers and freshmen. Bright spots include Pettiford, Keyshawn Hall, and Kevin Overton, but issues like free-throw shooting and defensive miscues remain. Auburn now faces a tune-up game against Queens on Dec. 29, hoping to break this disappointing skid.

In a shocking plot twist no one saw coming—except everyone who’s watched them—Auburn’s basketball team managed to orchestrate a reverse Cinderella story, turning a promising campaign into a cautionary fairytale. It’s like Bruce Pearl Jr. inherited a team of GPS devices without a signal: they know where to go but can’t find the basket. Rumor has it they’re installing a suggestion box at midcourt to crowdsource strategy, because apparently pirated PlayStation plays and motivational posters haven’t done the trick. If Queens defeats them, fans might start petitioning for a reinstatement of their volleyball squad just for the novelty.

Golesh’s Grand Entrance: Can Auburn Rebound?

After back-to-back disappointing tenures under Brian Harsin and Hugh Freeze, Auburn turned to USF’s Alex Golesh to steer the Tigers. ESPN analyst Bill Connelly awarded the hire a B+, citing Golesh’s turnaround at USF—from 8–37 in four seasons to consecutive 7–6 years and a 9–3 finish, just six points shy of 11–1. Golesh’s up-tempo offense will face stiff SEC competition, but Connelly believes if nine wins were possible at USF, Auburn is within reach. However, the portal has claimed 21 Tigers, including presumed starter Ashton Daniels, potentially to clear space for Golesh’s former QB, Byrum Brown. Golesh also revamped the staff, bringing in Auburn legend Kodi Burns and backfilling key roles amid a high-stakes transfer window opening Jan. 2.

In what experts are calling “Auburn’s annual exercise in optimism,” Golesh strolls into town with a pirate map and a prayer. Fans have begun drafting conspiracy theories that the 21 outgoing players were actually part of an elaborate practice drill—an immersive team-building exercise. Meanwhile, Kombucha-fueled Zoom meetings and co-head coaching experiments are trending on campus. If Brown doesn’t pan out, there’s always the option to recruit the local marching band as a QB corps. At this point, even the mythological Pegasus seems a safer bet to deliver touchdowns than Auburn’s current playbook.
