Matthew Fuller: Gamecock Comeback on the Horizon
Matthew Fuller, South Carolina’s emerging three-star running back recruit from the 2024 class, has officially announced he will return to Columbia in 2026. After a quiet true freshman season limited to redshirt duty and just eight carries, Fuller exploded as a redshirt freshman, ranking second among Gamecock backs with 260 rushing yards and two touchdowns. His standout performance came against LSU with 83 yards and a score on only eight carries. With key departures and a thin backfield, Fuller’s return offers a much-needed boost as Shane Beamer and new RB coach Stan Drayton prepare to scour the transfer portal in early January.
Meanwhile, the Gamecocks’ running back room is currently resembling a garage sale with clearance-rack talent. Fuller’s decision to stick around until 2026 must feel like Santa’s gift to South Carolina’s offense—too bad the offense itself is stuck in a perpetual holiday slump. Now that he’s back for another two seasons, expect Beamer to pinch-hit Fuller in press conferences until the portal window opens. Will they scoop up CJ Baxter, Quintrevion Wisner or Hollywood Smothers? Or will they just settle for rebranding the scout team as “Future Fuller Fan Club”? Stay tuned, because nothing screams elite college football program like frantically shopping the portal for running backs like they’re Black Friday TVs.
