FSU Football Shake-up: Transfers and Coaching Moves

FSU Football Shake-up: Transfers and Coaching Moves - painting of Florida State Seminoles football venue

FSU’s Punter Packs Bags After Aiming for Airtime

The Seminoles’ redshirt junior punter Mac Chiumento, who averaged 44 yards on 27 attempts this fall, has announced his entry into the NCAA transfer portal with one season of eligibility remaining. Chiumento, originally a preferred walk-on in 2022, served as primary backup before taking over punting duties this season. His departure comes amid a special teams overhaul following coordinator John Papuchis’s exit.

Sure, it’s not every day your punter decides to shop his leg talents elsewhere, but let’s face it—when your unit punts three games straight into the sunroof of an imaginary convertible, you might consider greener fairways. Chiumento’s farewell tour is the perfect ending to a special teams saga that felt like binge-watching a car crash in slow motion.

Seminoles Promote Homegrown Hero Ernie Sims as LB Boss

Florida State is expected to elevate assistant linebackers coach Ernie Sims, a local legend and former All-American, to full-time linebackers coach after John Papuchis’s departure. Sims, who played at FSU from 2003-05 and spent nearly a decade in the NFL, has been on staff since 2024 and previously served at FAU, USF, and UCF in various defensive roles.

Because when in doubt, promote your high-school sweetheart—nothing screams “fresh perspective” like handing the keys of your front-seven fortress to a guy who once blocked kicks for pocket change. Expect Sims to sprinkle his NFL wisdom on the Seminoles, as if linebackers really needed more life advice between tackling drills and “motivational” group chants.
