Wisconsin’s Transfer Portal Shuffle Hits Defense Hard

Wisconsin’s Transfer Portal Shuffle Hits Defense Hard - painting of Wisconsin Badgers football venue

Badgers Beef Up Trenches with Big 12 Bruiser

The University of Wisconsin has once again scoured the transfer portal to reinforce its defensive front, landing former West Virginia tackle Hammond Russell IV. The 6-3, 312-pound interior defender amassed 13 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks in nine games last season, building on a 2024 campaign that produced 17 tackles, three sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss. Wisconsin, having already added Arkansas’s Justus Boone and hosted Miami (OH) edge Adam Trick, needed depth after losing its top four linemen to graduation. With Russell IV and returning senior Charles Perkins, the Badgers hope to plug holes in their rotation.

It’s the offseason equivalent of a clearance-bin scavenger hunt: coaches elbowing each other over recycled linemen like they’re half-price TVs. If Wisconsin’s defensive line were an old pickup, the portal haul would be a replacement bumper, a new muffler and…oh, look, someone also tossed in a courtesy spare tire. Let’s pray the welds hold when Big Ten power hitters start road-testing this Frankenstein lineup.

Defensive Lineman Has Change of Heart, Leaps into Portal

Charles Perkins, who initially vowed on social media to return for a fifth season anchoring Wisconsin’s defensive line, reversed course this week and entered the transfer portal. Perkins was limited to eight games due to injuries but flashed potential with a four-tackle, two-TFL outing at Indiana. He arrived as a celebrated FCS Freshman All-American from UT-Martin and improved to 40 tackles, 9.5 TFL and eight hurries in 2024. Wisconsin has countered by adding Buffalo’s Junior Poyser and West Virginia’s Hammond Russell IV to its portal recruits.

Nothing says “commitment” like a spin-cycle of declarations on social media. Perkins’s U-turn makes dating in college look steadfast—until someone better swipes right. Meanwhile, coaches greet each portal entry like it’s Top Chef season premiere: “Will this fresh face blend or blow up in our stew?” At least they’re keeping snack tables stocked—portal drama’s hungriest fans are the ones filling out depth charts.

Badger Linebacker Swaps Red for Scarlet in Shocking Switch

Christian Alliegro, one of Wisconsin’s top defenders over the last two seasons, has committed to rival Ohio State after entering the transfer portal in mid-December. Alliegro broke out with 45 tackles in November of 2024, played through a broken arm and still finished the season with 53 tackles, eight tackles for loss and four sacks. After visits to Texas and Ohio State, the linebacker elected to stay in the Big Ten, becoming the second former Wisconsin starter to defect to a conference rival this week, following center Jake Renfro’s move to Illinois.

In the ultimate collegiate plot twist, Alliegro traded his Badger helmet for a Buckeye cap faster than you can say “walk-on.” It’s like discovering your roommate is secretly dating your sibling—awkward dinners guaranteed. Meanwhile, coaches dust off their crystal balls, trying to predict who’ll be next to tap that portal portal button. Hurry, though—the checkout line at BuckeyeLand is moving at warp speed.
