Defense Bolstered: Gamecocks Nab Journeyman Tackle
South Carolina’s coaching staff snagged defensive tackle Tomiwa Durojaiye from Illinois via the transfer portal. A three-star prospect who has hopped from Kentucky to West Virginia, Florida State, Illinois, and now Columbia, Durojaiye brings one year of eligibility and solid stats: 23 tackles, 6 TFL and 3.5 sacks at WVU; All-Big Ten honorable mention at Illinois. He’s expected to shore up the interior pass rush, stop the run, and offer versatility inside and out under coach Shane Beamer’s revamped defensive scheme.
In a bold display of collegiate hopscotch, South Carolina managed to recruit a player with more frequent flyer miles than a mid-level executive. The transfer portal now resembles Black Friday at Walmart—everyone’s scrambling for the same deal while the poor old high school recruits watch from the clearance rack. But hey, at least Durojaiye can sack a quarterback faster than your Wi-Fi drops out during prime time streaming.
Close Call: Gamecocks’ Biggest Lead Can’t Topple Bulldogs
The Gamecocks led much of the way but fell 65-72 to No. 18 Georgia, unable to muster more than one field goal in the final 5½ minutes. South Carolina’s defense held the Bulldogs to 25% from three, yet their own offensive drought—no second-half flurries and just 30 points—proved fatal. Mike Sharavjamts poured in 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting, but Georgia’s Kanon Catchings (20 points) and Somtochukwu Cyril (18 points, 8-for-8 shooting) iced the contest with key free throws after a flagrant foul call.
Nothing says “basketball tragedy” like firing off more bricks than a construction site. The Gamecocks’ offense went into hibernation faster than a bear in December, while Georgia’s Bulldogs sniffed out the cheese and closed the lid. One wonders if the team forgot to bring their scoring touch off the bench—must’ve gotten lost under all those social media reminders to “Stay hydrated!”
