Crimson Tide Basketball and Softball Highlights

Crimson Tide Basketball and Softball Highlights - painting of Alabama Crimson Tide basketball, softball venue

Crimson Tide Opens with Softball Bombardment

Alabama softball stormed the Buzz Classic with a perfect 5-0 sweep, outscoring opponents 51-6. The Tide clubbed 18 home runs—nearly half of last season’s total—in just three days, with 10 different sluggers going deep. Junior Salen Hawkins and freshman Ana Roman led the power surge, while balanced contributions from the entire lineup underscored head coach Patrick Murphy’s claim of two-deep talent at every position. Defensively, Alabama committed just two errors over five games. True freshman Vic Moten dazzled in the circle, posting a 3–0 record with a 0.93 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 15 innings, immediately slotting herself into the Tide’s pitching 1-2 punch alongside junior Jocelyn Briski.

Stop the presses: a softball team hit more rockets in a weekend than NASA this year. Clearly, Murphy’s recruiting pitch of “come to Alabama—bring your tee ball bat, you’ll hit moonshots”—paid off. Sophomores are now beating seniors in the outfield hierarchy like a Black Friday sale, and freshmen are tossing lasers in the circle faster than we can pronounce their names. Who knew that “softball depth” meant “we bench starters for dessert”? Expect this juggernaut to make opposing pitchers wish they’d stayed in bed.

Joe Gaither Rounds Up Iron Bowl, Super Bowl, Softball Madness

On the latest episode of “The Joe Gaither Show,” host Theo Fernandez recapped Alabama’s 96-92 Iron Bowl basketball triumph at Auburn, spotlighting Labaron Philon Jr.’s 25 points, Amari Allen’s Hall-of-Famer vibes, and Charles Bediako’s gritty performance. The conversation then switched to the Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl victory, featuring former Crimson Tide players, and closed with Alabama softball’s impressive opening weekend in Atlanta. The show wrapped with sponsor shout-outs and a call-in invite for fan reactions across YouTube, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and more.

If you thought one podcast could cover three sports in one hour, congratulations—you’ve found Alabama’s version of multi-tasking. Why settle for Netflix when you can watch Bama basketball, NFL highlights, and softball box scores in the same 30-minute block? The sponsors must be thrilled—nothing sells insurance quite like the threat of a baseball to the head, right Derek Daniel State Farm? Buckle up, call in with your thoughts, and prepare for the deluge of stats until the next episode consumes your sanity.

Tide Still Snubbed by Pollsters Despite Back-to-Back Wins

After dropping out of both the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll on Jan. 22, Alabama responded with thrilling wins over Texas A&M (100-97) and Auburn (96-92). Despite leading the SEC in raw vote count outside the rankings, the Crimson Tide remained unlisted, garnering 72 votes in the AP and 24 in the Coaches poll. The balanced scoring attack—highlighted by Aden Holloway’s and Labaron Philon Jr.’s combined 29 second-half points against the Aggies and four players with double figures against the Tigers—shows Alabama’s depth. Next up: road trip to Ole Miss and a home date with South Carolina.

Apparently, the pollsters are too busy debating who should rank 27th. Alabama can light up scoreboards and still earn an involuntary bye week in the rankings—truly the ultimate badge of honor. Maybe they’ll throw Alabama a participation trophy next? Until then, the Tide will keep crushing foes while the voters perfect their art of selective amnesia. Go ahead, Pollsters, keep your eyes on the rearview.

Philon Jr. Collects Fourth Freshman of the Week Award

Labaron Philon Jr. claimed Co-SEC Freshman of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after averaging 21.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals in wins over Texas A&M and Auburn. He poured in 17 points with seven made field goals against the Aggies and exploded for 25 points, five rebounds, six assists, a steal, and two blocks versus the Tigers despite a thigh bruise. Coach Nate Oats praised his talent and progress in reducing turnovers, noting Philon’s impact on Alabama’s in-state rivalry victories and season-long success.

Congratulations to freshman Labaron Philon Jr. for snagging more weekly awards than most students have grades. If he keeps this up, Nike will be fighting tooth and nail just to slap his face on a shoebox. Sure, he had a few turnovers—like a toddler learning to swim—but the SEC figured he’s worth the occasional belly flop. Stay tuned as Philon aims to turn “Freshman of the Week” into “Senior of the Year” before we can say “March Madness.”
