Czech Giant Joins Gamecocks: Nečas Heads South

Head coach Lamont Paris is shaking up South Carolina’s 2026–27 roster by nabbing 6-foot-10, 240-pound forward Jakub Nečas from the transfer portal. A native of Blansko, Czech Republic, Nečas led scoring at the 2024 FIBA U20 EuroBasket with 18.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. At Duquesne, he averaged 2.6 points and 1.9 rebounds as a freshman, then improved to 6.0 points and 4.4 rebounds on 39.4% shooting (70.8% FT) as a sophomore. Nečas joins fellow portal additions Aleksas Bieliauskas, Shane Blakeney, and Cameron Heide in bolstering the Gamecocks’ frontcourt.

In today’s transfer portal extravaganza, South Carolina’s basketball program resembles a high-stakes clearance sale for seven-footers. Coach Paris must be moonlighting as a mall Santa, handing out ‘nice list’ invitations to every lanky forward with a European accent. With Nečas arriving fresh from international stardom, the Gamecocks have essentially outsourced their frontcourt hiring to the United Nations. Fans should brace themselves: this roster makeover is less ‘March Madness’ and more ‘global takeover,’ complete with a Czech sharpshooter who might shoot you a polite nod before draining a three. Welcome to the future of college hoops recruitment, where passports are the new sixth man.
