WCWS Curtain-Raiser: Tennessee’s Softball Stars Take the Field
The Tennessee Lady Vols and Texas Longhorns squared off in the opening round of the Women’s College World Series. After a quick three-pitch top of the first by Tennessee’s defense, pitcher Sage Mardjetko retired the Vols in order. In the bottom half, the Lady Vols’ SEC Player of the Year Katie Stewart grounded out, and Texas closed out the inning with a fly-out. Tennessee answered in the second as Alannah Leach reached on a hit-by-pitch, followed by a walk for Makenzie Butt. Elsa Morrison then crushed a home run to put Tennessee ahead 3–0. The inning ended with a strikeout, and Sage Mardjetko took the mound again to face Texas in the third.
Welcome to Sportsworld Theater, where ballplayers and umpires alike pretend 3–0 feels like sudden death! Tennessee’s Alannah Leach mastered the “get-pitched-on” art form, and Elsa Morrison moonlighted as a fireworks display with that moonshot. Meanwhile, Texas seemed to believe fly-outs were avant-garde crowd-pleasers. In our exclusive satirical play-by-play, Tennessee’s bats arrived with VIP passes while Texas’s offense is still waiting in line. Coach Weekly is reportedly considering replacing the entire roster with those concession-stand nachos—they’d probably produce more hits. Stay tuned as this epic soap opera unfolds under Olympic-level scrutiny and thousands of squeaky foam fingers.
