New Tide on the Green: Lasprilla Takes the Helm at Alabama

Alabama University has announced the hiring of Lydia Lasprilla as head coach of the women’s golf program, succeeding Mic Potter after his 21-year tenure. Lasprilla, previously at Houston from 2021 to 2026, propelled the Cougars to unprecedented success: four straight NCAA Regional appearances, Houston’s first NCAA Championship berth in 2026, and a climb from No. 69 to No. 27 in the national rankings. She guided her team to multiple tournament championships, a school-record 13-under 275 postseason round, 25 top-five finishes, eight All-Conference selections, and 16 WGCA All-American Scholar honors. Athletic director Greg Byrne applauded her vision, and Lasprilla expressed excitement about building a championship culture at Alabama’s state-of-the-art Crimson Reserve facility.

Ah, Alabama golf—finally ready to swap its barbecue pits for birdie pits. Enter Lydia Lasprilla, the rising star who turned Houston’s golf team into the Ivy League of putting greens. Meanwhile, Mic Potter retires to an island somewhere, probably teaching crabs how to chip. The Tide faithful, accustomed to crimson and white, now prepare to don neon polos because obviously “comprehensive excellence” demands retro ’80s fashion on the fairway. One can only hope the next capital project is a practice bunker with karaoke machines—because nothing says “golf dynasty” like belting out show tunes between sand shots. But hats off to Coach Lasprilla: if anyone can turn campus squirrels into PGA Tour hopefuls, it’s her.
