Alabama Athletics: Rankings, Recruits, and NCAA Reform

Alabama Athletics: Rankings, Recruits, and NCAA Reform - painting of Alabama Crimson Tide basketball, football venue

Way-Too-Early Peeks: Tide’s 2026-27 Hoops Stock

After a Sweet 16 run and several portal moves, Alabama basketball’s outlook for 2026-27 has already been sketched by Sports Illustrated, ESPN, NCAA.com and On3. Each outlet slots the Crimson Tide just inside or on the fringe of their early Top 25, thanks largely to Amari Allen’s decision to withdraw from the NBA Draft, incoming freshmen, and strategic transfers like Drew Fielder, Jamarion Davis-Fleming and Brandon Garrison. Despite departures like Taylor Bol Bowen and Aiden Sherrell, Alabama’s blend of returners and new talent has pundits cautiously optimistic months before tipoff.

Nothing screams “we already miss March madness” like experts arguing over a season that hasn’t started, yet. It’s as if they hired fortune tellers who only know how to read NCAA press releases. Meanwhile, Nate Oats is probably scrolling these rankings on his phone, chanting “October can’t come soon enough” and wondering which players will still be standing when everyone inevitably jumps ship to the portal for the next shiny offer.

Saban vs. the Free-for-All: Congress Steps In

Nick Saban testified before Congress in support of the Protect College Sports Act, warning that unchecked NIL deals, transfer portal chaos and “collectives” are turning college athletics into a pay-for-play arms race. He endorsed a five-year eligibility limit, penalty-free transfers, and uniform national rules to preserve non-revenue Olympic and women’s sports. Saban argued that current state laws and lawsuits have crippled NCAA enforcement and urged lawmakers to rein in spending to protect scholarships, graduation rates, and the educational mission.

Imagine the Wizard of Tuscaloosa storming Capitol Hill in full Crimson Tide regalia, clutching a football helmet instead of a magic wand, hollering “Stop the Ferrari before it plunges into the Grand Canyon!” It’s peak Saban: part coach, part preacher, part alarm system. One can almost picture him distributing playbooks to senators, complete with diagrams of “good checks” and “bad checks” on collective cash.

Future Tide Titan: Alabama’s 2028 Linebacker Target

Nehemiah McCary, Alabama’s top in-state 2028 linebacker prospect and consensus four-star recruit, visited Tuscaloosa for a camp and left impressed by the facilities and coaching. The Maplesville High standout (6-3, 220) racked up 836 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns last season, helping his team to a 15-0 state title. McCary, ranked No. 27 nationally and No. 1 in Alabama, counts the Crimson Tide among his top three schools. Alabama’s coaching staff, barred from texting until June 15, has already begun courting McCary aggressively.

Recruiting buzz is basically high school theater: everyone smiles, nods, and sweeps the campus in slow-motion for Instagram. Meanwhile, McCary’s probably wondering if those “top-notch technologies” include a mind-reader to decode his text-ban cabin fever. The Crimson Tide’s true recruiting magic? Making a teenager believe that college football facilities could rival Disneyland if you squint hard enough.
