Five Hurricanes That Missed EA College Football Fame
The revival of EA Sports College Football 25 brought fans back to their childhood gridiron dreams, complete with a landmark first for the Miami Hurricanes: superstar wide receiver Malachi Toney gracing the EA Sports College Football 27 cover. Yet, in the game’s three-decade history since 1993, Miami legends like Cam Ward, Duke Johnson, the championship trio of Ed Reed/Clinton Portis/Ken Dorsey, breakout star Mark Fletcher Jr., and electric return ace Devin Hester were never featured. Each brought Heisman-worthy stats, national championships, or game-changing explosiveness that could have driven screen-tapping sales for EA.
If only EA had a crystal ball—or better yet, a time machine—they’d have realized that Cam Ward’s cannon arm and touchdown celebrations, Duke Johnson’s 2,073 all-purpose yards, the ’01 title-winning squad’s glory trio, Mark Fletcher Jr.’s championship-game heroics, and Devin Hester’s field-flipping speed were cover-worthy decades ago. Gamers everywhere would’ve thrown their wallets at midnight preorders and framed that box art like a Picasso. But alas, we’ll have to satisfy ourselves with imaginary Madden tournaments starring these Hurricanes on the virtual gridiron—complete with absurd touchdown dances that would make even Coach Saban blink twice.
