Penn State Tragedy and the Quest for New Football Rivals

Ex-Lion’s Devastating Hit-and-Run Shatters Life and Love

Former Penn State long snapper Kyle Vasey, a beloved member of the Nittany Lions football family from 2014 to 2018, and his fiancée Corinne More were struck by a vehicle on a Highlands Ranch, Colorado, sidewalk on June 1. Corinne, 35, died instantly; Vasey suffered life-threatening injuries and faces potential permanent disfigurement or death. The alleged driver, Adam Bauserman, 28, had a revoked license and is now charged with seven felonies, including vehicular homicide and assault. A GoFundMe set up by Vasey’s parents seeks to fund his long recovery.

In true tragic-hero fashion, Kyle’s tale reads like a gritty sports saga: the underdog long snapper taken down not by a fumble but by someone else’s inability to follow roadside etiquette. Meanwhile, some brilliant driver—who apparently believes “revoke license” is just a fun suggestion—turns a sleepy Colorado sidewalk into a demolition derby. And here we thought college football injuries were the worst part of game day. As fans, we’ll pray for his recovery and hope the GoFundMe doesn’t crash harder than that driver’s moral compass.

Rivalry Reboot: Four Non-Conference Matchups Penn State Craves

Penn State’s future non-conference schedule features games against Ball State, Maine, Marshall, Temple, Syracuse and UMass—hardly the stuff of legendary rivalries. With the College Football Playoff expanding, tougher matchups could boost playoff résumés and fan engagement, especially as Beaver Stadium undergoes a $700 million renovation. Top candidates for rekindling old flames include Pitt (historic in-state nemesis), Notre Dame (recent semifinal thriller), Virginia Tech (new coach-vs.-old-coach subplot) and West Virginia (regional foes). Scheduling these would reignite rivalries, boost attendance and satisfy coach Matt Campbell’s call for “great” college football traditions.

Ah, nothing says “we love tradition” like hiring a new coach and begging longtime foes to pencil you in between cupcakes and midweek scrimmages. Sure, Penn State might lose a game or two, but think of the Instagram stories! Fans will flock to Beaver Stadium like seagulls on fries, sipping overpriced sodas while reminiscing about Joe Paterno’s glory days. If only rivalries were sold in a concession stand clutch bag—“Would you like a side of historic bad blood with that?”—the university’s renovation fund would be full by halftime.
