Hoosier Heroes Hijack the Sports Universe
Indiana University alums are popping up everywhere in pro sports and beyond. After Curt Cignetti led the Hoosiers’ football team to a national championship and then commandeered the pace car at the Indy 500, ex-Heisman QB Fernando Mendoza went No. 1 in the NFL Draft. Former IU basketball manager Dusty May is cutting nets in the NCAA Tournament, while ex-Hoosier AJ Barner caught a touchdown in Super Bowl 60. The Philadelphia Phillies have been tearing it up with Indiana baseball legend Kyle Schwarber swinging for 55 homers, and the Knicks’ OG Anunoby is one rebound, one block, and one putback away from NBA Finals MVP. In short, if you want a sports takeover, look no further than Bloomington’s finest.
Move over global superpowers—Indiana is here to teach geography a lesson. Why stop at one sport when you can sprinkle Hoosier magic across football fields, racetracks, basketball courts, and baseball diamonds? Next we’ll see IU mascots moonlighting as NHL enforcers or leading Olympic curling teams. The Cream and Crimson have become the Swiss Army knife of athletics: versatile, sharp, and oddly unrelenting. Pass the popcorn—and a Xanax—because watching any other team right now feels like cheering for decaf coffee.
