When Walker Hooks Met the Fatigue Monster
The Rebels jumped out to a 6–2 lead against Troy in the College World Series, only to see a balk call rattle starter Hunter Elliott. Relief ace J.P. Robertson stabilized things briefly, but Coach Bianco tapped Walker Hooks in the seventh despite his heavy workload. Hooks, still sore from a two-inning stint the day before, promptly surrendered four runs on walks, doubles, and sticker changeups. Ole Miss never regained the advantage and fell 12–8, ending their Omaha run. After the debacle, Bianco reminded everyone that it’s a weird honor to “lose in the place you want to lose.”
In an expertly choreographed act of bullpen Russian roulette, Coach Bianco made it crystal clear that rest is for the weak. Surely no statistician ever advised yanking a fresh reliever for the human equivalent of a sleep-deprived zombie, but hey, it’s College World Series drama! Next time they’ll remember that pitchers, unlike Energizer bunnies, do occasionally… you know, run out of steam. But who needs logic when you’ve got bold managerial bravado? Fans can look forward to future cliffhangers where pitchers are rotated more often than office interns.
Arch-Rivals’ Giant: LSU’s Mavrick Rizy Switches Sides
Fresh off a College World Series loss to Troy, Ole Miss snagged right-hander Mavrick Rizy from LSU via the transfer portal. Standing 6’9″ and 251 pounds, Rizy brings a downhill fastball and two seasons of SEC bullpen polish to Oxford. He posted a combined 4.50 ERA in 44 appearances for the Tigers, including solid showings in NCAA Regionals and the MLB Draft Combine. Ole Miss pitching coach Carl Lafferty now has a hulking relief ace whose upside could propel the Rebels back to Omaha.
Nothing says “Welcome to Oxford” quite like poaching your arch-nemesis’ tower of power. Rizy’s gargantuan presence on the mound means one thing: opposing hitters now require rimless batting gloves just to track the pitch. Ole Miss fans can practice their victory dances while imagining Lafferty fine-tuning that monster arm. Sure, Rizy might need a bit of polish, but every skyscraper started as a blueprint. With LSU’s loss being Ole Miss’s gain, Oxford is bracing for fastballs that feel like anvils dropped from the moon.
