Hoosiers Reload the Cornerback Lineup
With D’Angelo Ponds moving on, Indiana’s football depth chart at cornerback undergoes a makeover. Redshirt senior Jamari Sharpe returns as an established starter after his clutch interception in the national title game. Ryland Gandy, the Pittsburgh transfer who filled in admirably against Iowa, and AJ Harris, the former five-star who’s now on his third program, vie for the vacated spot. Montana State’s Carson Williams looms as the under-the-radar wildcard. Meanwhile, underclassmen Jaylen Bell, Kasmir Hicks and redshirt freshman Zachary Smith provide youthful upside. Despite the shakeup, the Hoosiers believe their deepest corner group in recent memory can uphold—and perhaps even elevate—their secondary play in 2026.
Fear not, IU faithful: your cornerbacks aren’t plunging into an abyss now that Ponds is out of the picture. Instead, the coaching staff has restocked like squirrels hoarding nuts before winter. It’s a veritable “Transfer Portal Madness” lineup—one part reality TV, one part leftover pizza buffet. There’s Jamari “I’ve got this” Sharpe, the dependable veteran; Ryland Gandy, who RSVP’d “yes” when duty called; AJ Harris, hopping schools faster than a jackrabbit; and Carson Williams, creeping up like a stealth bomber. Toss in a few freshmen who still think pads are a type of snack, and you’ve got enough talent to confuse even the best Big Ten wideouts. If nothing else, it’ll be entertaining to watch them battle it out—think Hunger Games, but with less archery and more tackling.
