MSU’s Giant New Transfer and Pro-Am Freshman Showcase

MSU's Giant New Transfer and Pro-Am Freshman Showcase - painting of Michigan State Spartans basketball venue

From Vanuatu to Breslin: MSU’s Towering New Transfer

Anton Bonke, a 7’2″ center from Vanuatu—the first Division I player ever from the island nation—has landed at Michigan State via the transfer portal. Drawn by Tom Izzo’s winning pedigree and an environment where players stick around, Bonke impressed at the Moneyball Pro-Am: he looked more muscular, fluid, and scored 21 points on nine two-point makes while drilling all three of his free throws. His arrival addresses MSU’s need for rebounding and inside presence after losing Jaxon Kohler and Carson Cooper, and he’s already praising All-American point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. for making life easy in the post.

Behold the human giraffe in Spartans green, swooping in from the South Pacific like a Disney prince who bench-presses small buildings. Bonke’s transfer pitch was basically “Come swing with Izzo,” which is coach-speak for “endless pizza and existential dread.” He’s clearly bulked up—for a 7’2” guy, just existing burns more calories than a cardio bunny—and he’s already talking championships like they’re going out of style. If his sky-high free throws start rattling the foundation of the Breslin Center, at least we’ll know it’s not just the popcorn machine going haywire.

Pro-Am Pandemonium: Freshman Stars, Sky Hooks, and Space Threes

On Night 2 of the Moneyball Pro-Am in Holt, five-star guard Jasiah Jervis exploded for 44 points and four-star wing Julius Avent answered with 40, proving MSU’s five-member freshman class is already turning heads. Jesse McCulloch dusted off the legendary sky hook—yes, the Kareem signature—while 6’6” Jordan Scott launched from well beyond the taped college arc. Their performances hinted at possible lineup shakeups and showed off the Spartans’ evolving inside-out threats heading into the preseason.

It’s like the Spartans turned the high school gym into a glitzy carnival: freshmen raining points like they’re playing Fruit Ninja, McCulloch resurrecting the sky hook because pivot moves are too mainstream, and Scott launching deep bombs in pursuit of NBA coaching fish fries. Coach Izzo watched from the sideline, probably clutching his clipboard and wondering if he needs a hard hat for the incoming fireworks. If MSU’s season opener ends up looking like Space Jam 3, don’t be surprised—this is just the dress rehearsal.
