Virginia Tech’s Recruiting Boom and Cal Clash

Hokies Head West: 2026 Showdown Preview vs. Cal

Virginia Tech travels to Berkeley in Week 6 of the 2026 season to face a California team led by sophomore QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who threw for 3,454 yards, 18 TDs and nine picks as a freshman. While not a dual threat, his pocket passing challenged defenses all year. The Golden Bears lost top rusher Kendrick Raphael Jr. to SMU but added transfer Adam Mohammed from Washington. On the receiving end, they’ll lean on returning slot Mason Mini and newcomers Ian Strong (Rutgers) and Chase Hendricks (Ohio). Defensively, Cal must replace 188 tackles from two departed linebackers and account for NFL-bound cornerback Hezekiah Masses’s absence. Last season’s double-overtime thriller ended 42–34 in favor of the Hokies, but this rematch could swing either way depending on Cal’s playmakers. Prediction: California 34, Virginia Tech 26.

If you ever wondered how to turn a laid-back road trip into a Hollywood thriller, just pack an ACC squad and send it across the country. Hokies and Bears will meet in Berkeley, where one chugs artisanal kale smoothies and the other chucks the pigskin like it’s on fire. Jaron-Keawe “I-throw-like-a-snapchat-star” Sagapolutele returns for his sophomore tour de force, and VT’s defense will act surprised that a guy named Jah-No-Key is good at football. Meanwhile, Cal’s transfer buffet might have more flair than Grand Central, except you’re not quite sure if you’ll like your main course until kickoff. Expect a barnburner, a soul-searching meltdown, or both—probably served with a side of double O.T. and sourdough tears.

Recruitment Mayhem: What’s Next for Virginia Tech?

Virginia Tech added nine recruits in June to reach 26 commitments for the 2027 class. The Hokies have solidified depth at quarterback with four-star Peter Bourque, stacked running back and wide receiver rooms with three commits each, and secured three tight ends including unanimous four-star Jordan Karhoff. On the offensive line, they hold three four-star prospects and may add one more. Defensively, Tech could finish its class by targeting another lineman, linebacker or safety, while cornerback depth is strong with four commits. With Marcellous Hawkins exiting eligibility and Jeffrey Overton Jr. as a redshirt sophomore, Virginia Tech seeks additional contributors to maintain its top-20 standing under Coach Franklin.

Behold the Hokie recruiting buffet: nine fresh meat recruits piled onto an already gargantuan commitment platter. It’s like they went to Costco and said, “We’ll take nine more of everything, hold the broccoli.” Next up: deciding whether to chase another wideout faster than a caffeinated roadrunner or stockpile interior linemen for a human wall demonstration. Defensively, Tech’s wishlist reads “one tackle or end, please,” like your grandmother at Christmas “just a little something, dear.” If these kids sign, Franklin’s ledger will look like Monopoly money—everywhere, and you’re not sure you’ve spent enough until your opponents have none left. Tune in next fall for the Hokies’ recruiting highlight reel—or should we say, epic trailer for 2027?
