From Toolbox to Touchdowns: Parker Cross’s Spring Ball Saga

Parker Cross, a 6-foot-2, 292-pound walk-on from Seattle, has spent three spring practice seasons serving as UW’s emergency center—stepping in as second-unit and even first-team center when injuries hit. After the coaching change from Kalen DeBoer to Jedd Fisch gutted the offensive line, Cross donned shoulder pads (and metaphorical tool belts) to fill the void. He took reps as the No. 1 center in a pinch during one spring session, then again filled the backup role for 13 practices this April. A construction management major whose name literally means “keeper of the park,” Cross even made his game debut last December in the LA Bowl’s final series.

Oh, rejoice! Our hero Parker Cross, the holy handyman of Montlake, saunters in holding a wrench in one hand and a playbook in the other. Who needs scholarship linemen when you’ve got a center whose spring practice résumé reads like an emergency repair log? The Huskies should just hand him a Swiss Army knife next, maybe patch holes in the roof while he’s at it. And sure—he’s got senior starters ahead of him, so “starter status” might remain as elusive as finding a parking spot at Dempsey Indoors on gameday. But hey, imagine the hood ornaments they’ll forge in his honor once he starts tightening up cracked helmets and loose snaps.
