Caleb Wheatland: Spartan Secret Weapon Emerges

Michigan State’s linebacker room has been bolstered by the transfer portal addition of Caleb Wheatland, ranked No. 18 on the Spartans’ Top 30 players list. While star linebacker Jordan Hall locks down the MIKE spot and incoming transfer Dion Crawford claims WILL, Wheatland projects as the third option in a rotation built for durability and versatility. At Maryland, Wheatland piled up 83 tackles over two seasons, including 12.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks, and earned strong pass-rushing (72.2) and coverage (74.4) grades from Pro Football Focus. His tackling grade lagged (36.0), but with Hall and Crawford handling bulk duties, Wheatland’s sack-getting and coverage skills fill critical gaps for Pat Fitzgerald’s defense, which ranked low in sacks per game last fall.

Welcome to Spartan Stadium: where “depth” now includes a linebacker who’s mastered the art of chasing quarterbacks and occasionally missing tackles with equal enthusiasm. Wheatland’s journey—from redshirting three games at Auburn to terrorizing backfields for Maryland—proves one thing: when life gives you a missed-tackle rate above 28 percent, make pass-rush lemonade. Sure, MSU’s pass rush was about as menacing as a huddle of kittens last season, but throw in Wheatland and suddenly it’s like trading your old Whiffle ball for a flaming cannonball. Pat Fitzgerald must be thrilled to craft a defensive rotation so convoluted that fans will need an instruction manual just to keep track of who’s wearing the green helmet on any given snap. Expect more sacks, more dropped coverage, and a new Spartan buzzphrase: “Hey, is that Wheatland or the janitor?”
