Star Lineman Swaps Tiger Stripes for Gamecock Feathers

Nate Carson, a consensus four-star offensive lineman and the sixth-ranked recruit in South Carolina, stunned the college football world by committing to the South Carolina Gamecocks over his home-state rival Clemson, as well as Georgia and Colorado. Carson, rated No. 184 nationally and No. 24 at his position, visited both in-state programs six times before making his choice official on CBS Sports College Football’s YouTube channel. The Gamecocks had initially offered him a scholarship in September 2024, and since then, various Power Five programs like Florida State, Alabama, Ohio State, Tennessee and more joined the chase. Carson’s junior season featured an offense that averaged nearly 400 yards per game and led his high school to a state runner-up finish. His commitment is the third blue-chip addition South Carolina has snagged in three days, bolstering their class with former Clemson targets Joshua Dobson and Davion Jones.

Hold the presses—turns out all you needed to lure a blue-chip recruit was a steady diet of in-state visits and perhaps a few well-timed Gamecock chicken sandwiches. Forget “This isn’t rocket science,” because, apparently, convincing a top lineman to pick one NCAA program over another requires marathon recruiting visits, contingency plans for Colorado, and a dash of southern hospitality. Meanwhile, Clemson can rest easy knowing its offensive line class is “full,” as if mere numbers equate to the emotional devastation of losing a top prospect to your rival. But hey, at least the Tigers can console themselves with the knowledge that football’s all about metrics: visits, offer lists, and—most importantly—the tear-stained recruiting board at 2 a.m.
