Texas Phenom Emerson Lands No. 2 Pick in MLB Draft - painting of Texas Longhorns baseball venue

High School Phenom Emerson Snatched at No. 2 Overall

Grady Emerson, the standout shortstop from Fort Worth Christian School, was selected second overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in Saturday’s MLB Draft. Touted as the top player in many mocks, Emerson boasts a .532 batting average in his final high school season and carries both state and national Gatorade Player of the Year honors. While projections pegged him as a likely No. 1 pick, the Rays pounced at No. 2, securing one of college baseball’s most coveted talents. Though the University of Texas Longhorns had hoped to reel him in, Emerson’s immediate pro trajectory seemed inevitable. His selection kicks off what promises to be a Longhorn-heavy draft, with several Texas recruits—like Brody Bumila, Aiden Robbins and others—expected to hear their names called in the early rounds.

Congratulations to Tampa Bay for snagging a kid who hits .532 like it’s a leisurely stroll in the park—and by “park” we mean Fort Worth Christian’s perfectly manicured outfield. Meanwhile, back in Austin, Longhorns fans are clutching their burnt-orange thermoses, praying for divine intervention in next year’s portal. But let’s be honest: while Jim Schlossnagle and staff scramble after “big fish,” the only thing more unlikely than a hometown hero signing with Texas is their basketball team not finding new ways to confound even the most optimistic bracketologists.
