Clemson’s Secondary Revamp and ACC Tampering Drama

Clemson’s New DB Duo Set to Bolt the Secondary

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has pinpointed glaring weaknesses in his secondary after last season’s No. 118 national finish in pass defense. With starters Khalil Barnes and Ricardo Jones off the roster, Clemson added two seasoned safety transfers: Jerome Carter from Old Dominion, who logged 75 tackles and six interceptions in 2025, and Corey Myrick from Southern Miss, whose 92 tackles and four pass breakups made him a standout. Both players bring “maturity, confidence and competitiveness” to shore up a Tigers backfield that surrendered over 250 passing yards per game. True freshman Polo Anderson has also impressed, and defensive coordinator Tom Allen expects him to see snaps as the group adjusts to new schemes this fall.

Dabo Swinney is throwing around “all-conference” like it’s candy on Halloween, hoping the sweet talk sticks. Believing two guys can single-handedly plug a leaky roof might be optimism or pure comedy—Clemson fans will decide if it’s a sequel to last year’s defensive flop or the start of a defensive renaissance. Either way, the side-eye from critics is guaranteed, and if these transfers stumble, Swinney’s pep talk might go down as the year’s best blooper reel.

Phillips Declares War on ACC Tampering Chaos

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips, speaking at the conference’s kickoff event in Charlotte, delivered a stern rebuke of alleged tampering around high-profile transfers. Citing the Darian Mensah move to Miami and the Luke Ferrelli saga—committing to Clemson, then withdrawing for Ole Miss—Phillips stressed the need for the NCAA and the College Sports Commission to enforce rules. He warned that “playing in the margins” and legal challenges have hampered accountability, and called on insiders to report tampering or face consequences. With the 2026 season fast approaching, Phillips urged stronger enforcement to curb what he called unprecedented lack of restraint in college sports.

Jim Phillips, ACC’s very own hall monitor, is ready to blow the whistle on any coach caught peeking at the transfer portal rulebook. Armed with sanctimonious quotes, he demands accountability—yet offers no new teeth to bite. Will this speech spark a crackdown or just echo through the empty halls of bureaucratic gridlock? Either way, Phillips may soon add “ringmaster of tampering circus” to his résumé if the chaos continues.
