ESPN’s Crystal Ball: Hokies’ 2026 Win Chances
ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) has released game-by-game win probabilities for Virginia Tech’s 2026 season. The Hokies are heavy favorites in their first seven matchups—opening against VMI (99%), Old Dominion (84.7%), Maryland (63.1%), Boston College (71.9%), Pittsburgh (58.6%), California (57.2%) and Georgia Tech (66%). Their predicted first loss comes at Clemson (26.9%), followed by underdog roles at SMU (33.8%) and an ACC showdown vs. Miami (10.8%). VT rebounds as favorite vs. Stanford (84.8%) and edges Virginia in the rivalry finale (54.3%). FPI envisions a 9-3 finish, their best start since 2011.
Editorial: In a stunning display of fortune-teller wizardry, ESPN’s FPI has apparently been consulting voodoo dolls and crystal orbs to peg every one of the Hokies’ outcomes. So relax, faithful, because the algorithm promises only two midseason blips—no matter if injuries, weather spells or rogue squirrels show up. And if the final score doesn’t match the prediction? Blame the squirrels. After all, who wouldn’t trust a spreadsheet that nails a 99% chance over an FCS opponent? At this rate, the Hokies might as well tweet their jersey rotations and still pull off an undefeated start—until Tennessee rolls in, of course.
Inside VT’s 2026 Depth Chart: Who’s Starting?
Virginia Tech’s post-spring evaluations set the projected two-deep for offense and defense. On offense, Ethan Grunkemeyer leads at quarterback with Bryce Baker backing up; Marcellous Hawkins tops the running back board; Ayden Greene, Que’Sean Brown and Takye Heath head up the receiver corps; Luke Reynolds and Benji Gosnell anchor tight end; and an experienced offensive line features transfers and holdovers. Defensively, Javion Hilson, Kemari Copeland, Elhadj Fall and Aycen Stevens man the D-line; Noah Chambers and Kaleb Spencer patrol linebacker; Isaiah Brown-Murray, Jaquez White and Joshua Clarke cover cornerback slots; and Quentin Reddish and Tyson Flowers start at safety. Depth battles remain under wraps.
