Gators’ Luke McNeillie Turns Pro, Joins Mets

Florida Fireballer Luke McNeillie Opts for Mets Over Gators

Luke McNeillie, the 6-foot-3 right‐hander from the Florida Gators, has declined his final year of college eligibility to sign a professional contract with the New York Mets. Taken in the fifth round of the MLB Draft, he inked a $497,500 deal—$25,000 above slot value—after a Gator career marked by mid‐90s fastballs, a potent slider and curve, and recurring injuries. Over 122 innings in college, he posted a 5.24 ERA with a 12–8 record and a 163‐to‐62 strikeout‐to‐walk ratio. His standout junior campaign in 2026 saw a 3.97 ERA across 18 appearances, but shoulder setbacks hampered his momentum.

In a move that shocks exactly no one, McNeillie traded his college textbooks and sunscreen for duffel bags and gnarly locker‐room smells. The Mets, ever vigilant for the next “injury-prone flamethrower,” ponied up half a million dollars—because nothing says “pro potential” like a history of health hiccups. One can only imagine the collective sigh of relief from Florida’s coaching staff, who now have fewer pitchers to nag about R-days and arm maintenance. A toast to the next Gator hero—may his fastball live longer than his foam roller!
