Safeties Assemble: Miami’s 2026 Defensive Dream Team

Miami’s secondary has bet on youth and come up aces, thrusting freshmen and sophomores into high-stakes games to hone elite ball-hawking and bone-crunching skills. Now, eyes turn to the safety and nickel corps for 2026: Bryce Fitzgerald, a muscular interception machine who led the ACC with six picks and powered his way to the National Championship game; Zechariah Poyser, the freshman All-American turned perimeter assassin who blitzes, bails, and tackles with equal ferocity; and transfer Omar Thornton, Boston College’s turnover specialist who racked up 82 tackles, 11.5 TFLs and five forced fumbles before signing on with the Canes. Add spring camp sensation JJ Dunnigan, opportunist Dylan Day and legacy phenom Camdin Portis, and Miami’s back end looks poised to swallow quarterbacks whole come fall.

In an absolute shocker, the Miami coaching staff decided that throwing raw teenagers face-first into SEC-level live tackles was the best developmental plan known to humankind. Bryce Fitzgerald bulked up 20 pounds of pure beast mode because clearly the only way to stop a pass is by bench-pressing offensive coordinators into submission. Zechariah Poyser’s highlight reel now includes bone-shattering hits paired with polite “sorry, not sorry” nods—uniquely American sportsmanship at its finest. And let’s not forget Omar Thornton, who apparently read “How to Force Fumbles for Dummies” over last summer. Meanwhile, JJ Dunnigan, Dylan Day and Camdin Portis are on standby, ready to audition for the starring role in “The Freshman Backfield Massacre.” If this safety corps doesn’t scare quarterbacks into early retirement, nothing will—except maybe an actual hurricane.
