Venables Admits OU Defense Still Finding Its Mojo
Brent Venables, fresh off fall camp, cautions Oklahoma fans that the Sooners’ defense remains a work in progress just three weeks before kickoff. While acknowledging the roster’s proven talent—from household names to under-the-radar standouts—Venables insists this unit has not yet reached “great” status. He praises both the blue-chip recruits and the unsung heroes who play like All-Americans, stressing that humility, hunger, and relentless daily effort will determine whether his group can elevate from good to great. Despite returning much of last year’s College Football Playoff–caliber talent, the coach underscores that the smallest stride forward is the hardest, and improvements in detail work will be critical. Time, he says, will tell if this defense can meet its lofty expectations.
In a move that surely shocked no one, Venables reminded everyone that just because you collect a bunch of NFL prospects, you can’t instantly morph into the Steel Curtain. It’s almost as if defensive excellence requires actual practice, cohesion and, brace yourselves, effort. Surely a revolutionary concept in Norman. Until our Sooners learn to hustle through drills without napping in the huddle, fans can look forward to cinematic displays of “will they, won’t they” defensive brilliance—complete with suspenseful pauses, dramatic gasps, and maybe a tearful halftime pep talk. Stay tuned for next week’s cliffhanger: will the linebackers remember which way to run? Tune in for the thrilling sequel.
