Longhorns Fall Camp Scrimmage: Key Insights & Surprises

Longhorns Scrimmage Recap: Flu Fiasco & Fresh Faces Shine

The Texas Longhorns kicked off fall camp with their first full-squad scrimmage, revealing a handful of looming storylines. A mid-scrimmage flu outbreak sidelined six players but, miraculously, no major injuries surfaced. On defense, freshman cornerback Graceson Littleton dazzled with a 75-yard pick-six, while safety Jonah Williams returned from shoulder surgery to snag a dramatic end-zone interception. On offense, true freshman RB Derrek Cooper earned rave reviews for his power and field awareness, despite starting third on the depth chart. Overall, Will Muschamp’s defense looked ahead of the offense through the first week and a half of camp. Several potential scorers found pay dirt—Cam Coleman, Arch Manning, Ryan Wingo, KJ Lacey to Raleek Brown, and Dia Bell to Kohen Brown—hinting at an unsettled QB3 race. Finally, the first-string offensive line featuring Trevor Goosby, Laurence Seymore, Connor Robertson, Brandon Baker and Melvin Siani impressed with physicality and continuity in run blocking and pass protection.

Ah yes, nothing says “we’re ready for prime time” like a team flu epidemic providing built-in excuses for “practice rust.” Meanwhile, true freshmen are out here auditioning to become the next Earl Campbell overnight, while the veterans are left wondering if fall camp is actually an open mic night for the new kids. Coach Sark must be secretly thrilled: now he can attribute any early-season hiccups to rogue rhinoviruses, while pouting that the scrimmage defense is “a little bit” ahead of the offense. At this rate, we’ll see more highlight reels of Derrek Cooper than there are hand sanitizing stations on campus. And don’t get me started on that QB3 battle—apparently the real competition is who can cough the least.
